Hot Wheels Collector Guide: Treasure Hunts, Lines & How to Collect
Hot Wheels is the biggest name in diecast. Mattel launched the line in 1968 and has released thousands of castings since, from licensed sports cars to wild fantasy designs.
For collectors, the fun is in the layers: cheap mainline cars on every store peg, premium lines with rubber tires and metal bases, and the hidden Treasure Hunts that everyone is hunting for.
What is a Hot Wheels chase car?
Hot Wheels hides two kinds of chase car in its mainline cases. The regular Treasure Hunt looks like a normal mainline car apart from a small flame logo. The Super Treasure Hunt is the big one: a premium version of a mainline car with special paint and rubber tires.
- Super Treasure Hunt: shiny Spectraflame paint
- Super Treasure Hunt: Real Riders rubber tires
- Treasure Hunt: circle-flame logo on the car and the card

Mainline vs premium
Mainline cars are the basic blister-carded cars you find at Walmart, Target and grocery stores. They are released in lettered cases through the year, and each case mixes new castings with returning ones.
Premium lines such as Car Culture, Boulevard and Pop Culture cost more but add rubber tires, metal bases and more detailed printing. Many adult collectors focus on these lines.
How Hot Wheels cases work
Mattel ships mainline cars to stores in cases labelled with a letter (A, B, C and so on). Each letter is a new assortment, and collectors track case letters to know which Treasure Hunts can show up on the pegs.
